Abstract

The Cryptoeconomics Research Lab at the Vienna University of Economics and research firm BlockScience have independently and collaboratively pursued research into Token Economics and Economic Sytem Engineering. This presentation will be comprised of two parts

  1. Summarizing our findings regarding relevant fields, the use of terms including their consistencies between fields, and the practical challenges arising in industry applications

  2. Sharing our interdisciplinary research roadmap focus on motivating specific interdisciplinary opportunities including references to our working papers.

As a basic premise our work integrates concepts from across the fields of Law, Political Economics, Monetary Theory, Behavioral Economics, Cybernetics, Operations Research, Data Science, Complexity Science and Computer Science. A primary motivation of our current work is to build shared language to make this interdisciplinary space accessible to more researchers.

Outline

Provide a structured approach to the definition of Token Economics and Token Engineering as new scientific fields where Token Economics focuses on the domain of study and Token Engineering focuses on the methods and tools used in the design and analysis a Token Economy. We will

  • introduce a taxonomy of Tokens
  • Introduce a taxonomy of Token Economic Systems
  • Introduce a variety of Token Engineering Methods, Processes and Tools
  • Map various disciplines and their subdisciplines to these Methods, Processes and Tools
  • Demonstrate how Token Economics increases understanding of economies
  • Discuss the relationship between Economic System Engineering and Token Economics in expanding our understanding of economies
  • Present our research roadmap for Token Economics and Economic System Engineering and Token Engineering
