Self Sovereign ID for the DGOV network

Hi Friends,
after doing the network map few people suggested to connect it with the blockchain ID. I was thinking about using some ID as well. Probably for the

  • social recognition,
  • easier matchmaking,
  • access to decision making,
  • experiments etc.

I wonder if anybody has experience with integrating SSID systems in such networks? What should we think about and prepare to? Do you feel that as needed or a complication. Thanks!

Hi Max! Sell Sovereign ID for individuals and organisations is pretty much part of a essential future foundation for a DGOV network. There are many active projects in DIF https://identity.foundation/
but the standards stack is still emerging … the DID (identifier) and some way to go before we get DID-auth (alternative to sign on with facebook). Obviously there are leading candidate open solutions like Sovrin available now, and these have their own global governance structures, with permissioned stewardship. I’m on the Sovrin Gov Forum working group on use cases and could introduce / make contact if you like, but it may be better to sketch out an identity architecture and roadmap (incl. governance) and discuss it here before engaging with any particular solution set, even if open source. Personally, I think it will be a while before SSI and underlying blockchain is ready for use at scale, but that should not stop us from storyboarding what we want here. There are some tensions between SSI, with its pseudonymous respect of individual privacy, and the potential intrusiveness of ‘reputation systems’ that are often described in some decentralised governance arrangements.

Agreed. SSID is essential. There are a number of choices today, and some of them do not require traditional KYC. I think that for our purposes, that’s crucial. The other crucial factor is the inability to create multiple IDs. Two solutions that are interesting are PeerMountain and BrightID. One uses a facial recognition video (not still photo) for unique identification, and the other uses social graph. Both teams have worked very hard to make sure that you can’t game the system and that traditional government-issued identification is not required. I don’t know how much they will comply with the DID standards once they come out. From what I understand, there is a major debate around the need for Zero Proof Knowledge and the standard is stalled around some details. Another issue, I believe, is that the technology isn’t developed enough for the standards to be released. I’ll be attending an event in Vienna this weekend to find out more.

I find a great resource for all things SSI is the SSI meetup page and excellent recordings and presentations / recordings. Start at the beginning with webinar 1 on an intro and some of the history of identity solutions perhaps… https://ssimeetup.org/story-open-ssi-standards-drummond-reed-evernym-webinar-1/

Max, I really like the network visualization. I have been using and experimenting with governance landscape representations (usually on walls and fold out paper maps ) for a long time. I made a start on something here: DgovMap Navigator I’d be interested in ways of adding X Y dimensioning for a ‘default’ alternative positioning of the nodes in your map on a 2-dimensional space. This is a bit off topic on SSI, so grateful for a pointer to a more appropriate thread somewhere.

Nick, will DM you on that matter =)

Perhaps the guys at Jolocom have a good toolkit to use, and are well connected with this community? Are they on here?
See “Demo services using ‘SSI Building Blocks’ now available” by Jolocom https://link.medium.com/wB6AWhMDzZ

Ela Kagel was with them on the DGOV identity panel at the W3C summit identity node. They seem well connectes with us. But the long term challenge of global interoperability is illustrated in his thread from IIW28… making progress with DID:web https://medium.com/@decentralized.identity/the-did-dilemma-when-is-an-identifier-decentralized-9c2c68433b67
